Car brakes wear out over time and require service. Maintaining your brakes is an optimal way to ensure your car is in top shape whether it’s an emergency stop to avoid an accident or a routine stop at a red light. No matter where you’re going, you need good brakes to help you get there.

How Do Brakes Works?

Braking systems use hydraulic components which use friction to stop a moving vehicle. When you depress the brake pedal, the pressure on the brake pedal moves a piston in the master cylinder, forcing brake fluid from the master cylinder through the brake lines to the calipers and wheel cylinders. The calipers and wheel cylinders contain pistons, which are connected to a disc brake pads or brake shoes. Each piston pushes the attached pad or shoe against the surface of the rotor or wall of the brake drum, thus slowing down the rotation of the wheel. When pressure on the pedal is released, the pads and shoes return to their released positions forcing the brake fluid back through brake hoses to the master cylinder.

BRAKE CALIPERS REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

In a disc-braking system the caliper slows the car’s wheels by creating friction with the rotors. Inside each brake caliper is a pair of brake pads, caliper fits over the rotor like a clamp. When you step on the brake, brake fluid from the master cylinder creates hydraulic pressure in the brake caliper, forcing the pads against the rotor. When you back off the brakes, the caliper releases pressure on the brake pads.

Over time calipers can become contaminated, rusty, and start to leak brake fluid. If a caliper binds, the brake pads wear unevenly. At Advanced Auto Repair we clean and service calipers as part of a brake service job.

BRAKE DRUM REPLACEMENT

Drum brakes work on the same principle as disc brakes: Shoes press against a spinning surface. Drum brakes are more effective than a disc brakes as a parking brake, however modern cars have disc brakes all round, or discs at the front and drums at the rear. The advantage of discs is that they can dissipate heat more quickly and are easier to take apart and put back.

Deep scores wear into brake drums over time. If a worn-out brake shoe is used for too long, the rivets that hold the friction material to the backing can wear grooves into the drum.

BRAKE SHOES REPLACEMENT

When the brakes are applied, the brake shoe presses against the inside of the drum. The friction between brake show and drum slowing down the car. The energy of slowing down the car is dissipated as heat.

Changing the brake shoes is the most common service required for drum brakes. Brake shoes should be replaced when the friction material has worn down.

WHEEL CYLINDER REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

In a drum braking system the wheel cylinder is positioned at the top of the wheel, above the shoes. Its function is to exert force onto the shoes so as to bring them into contact with the drum and stop the vehicle with friction.

Wheel cylinders must be replaced if they show signs of leaking. A leaking wheel cylinder hinder the performance of the brakes.

MASTER CYLINDER REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

The master cylinder is a control device that converts force from the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure, moving hydraulic fluid evenly to wheel cylinders inside brake calipers or drum brakes, pushing the brake pads towards a surface that rotates with the wheel creating friction. A reservoir above each master cylinder supplies the master cylinder with enough brake fluid to avoid air from entering the master cylinder.

Not having enough brake fluid in the master cylinder can be very damaging. The most common reason for replacing the master cylinder is use.

ABS REPAIR & SERVICE

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking system preventing the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining traction contact with the road surface. ABS offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and some slippery surfaces while improving steering control.

The most common maintenance on a faulty ABS system is a faulty speed sensor that determine the rate at which the wheels are moving, and relay that information to the ABS.
